Involve Me and I Learn

Involve Me and I Learn

Feb 21, 2017

Years ago I heard the old Chinese proverb, “Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I may remember, Involve me and I learn.”  I was blessed with an excellent memory, so I didn’t quite understand the forgetting or not remembering parts, but the involve me part always made sense.  Despite my great memory I learned much, much faster when I was involved in the learning.

Over the years I have learned and I have taught; and the one constant factor in both has been the hands on approach of being involved which achieved the best and quickest results. Involvement seems to leave an indelible impression on our brains which makes it all too natural to do the thing exactly as we had learned it. As I aged and my memory was not as sharp as it used to be I started to understand the greater importance of the “involve me” aspect of learning.

For you parents, have you held your little child’s hand and slowly moved his/her hand to write a word so that they can learn how to properly form the letters?  Have you tried teaching them math with pieces of fruit, jelly beans or gummy bears?  Give it a shot if you have little ones just starting to learn.  The results, in my experience, are phenomenal.

The best bosses I have ever had took an hour or two of their time to illustrate what they expect from my position to make me more efficient and to make their lives much more productive.  The ones who expect the employee to figure things out on his/her own quickly become frustrated because most times the learning curve is much slower.  Spending a couple of hours to involve me in the process saved time, money and energy in the long run.

As a football coach I noticed that when a coach stepped in and illustrated the drill, instead of just barking out orders, so much so as to actually move the player thru the motion from beginning to end achieved much better and quicker results.

Our brains seem to absorb an experience much better than a word or an order.  The actual participation is similar to etching the material into the brain thus making it an ingrained, almost innate, part of the person.

As I teach people how to read stock charts and trade options I noticed that although every student is receiving the exact same material, it is the ones who participate in the trading pit and in the Q&A webinars who achieve success in applying the processes.

Everything is simple once you participate in that activity and become involved.  The idea of getting someone involved has been visited in many ways over the years.  Have you ever heard of “monkey see monkey do?”  When kids idolize and imitate actors, singers, athletes, etc.  Isn’t that the learning process they used?  They became involved in the same thing that their idol was doing.

How about “Do as I say not as I do”, how much success has anyone achieved with that method?  I haven’t seen that approach achieve enough results to sway me toward its use.

Those who know how to teach get into the mix of things and involve the student, child, athlete or employee and as a result are the ones achieving success and leaving an everlasting impression.

In short, as a parent, coach, friend, teacher or boss there is one factor which always achieves results an always leaves an indelible impression.  What kind of impression and what kind of results are realized start with you.  You decide how enjoyable and how successful that learning process will be for the person learning.

Take charge and make a positive difference in the lives of those who are looking up to you to learn and to prosper. Involve them and see how much more fulfilled you will be as well.

The best way to make money in any environment is to follow the CARDINAL RULE and make your money work for you.
